Arts

Art is the expression of human creative skills and imagination. A high quality of art education should make students engage, inspire and challenge. These will lead them to create, experiment and innovate through art. Students’ progress should show critical thinking and deep understanding of art through output and more importantly, how art shaped our history and culture.

SUBJECT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. The Art Department of SMM ensures a high-quality art and design education to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design, within the framework of the UK National Curriculum and the UAE’s aspirations for a world-class educational system, responsive to national needs and aligned to international standards. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

In KS 1 (Years 1 and 2), pupils experience and observe to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination, they develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They look at work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

In KS 2 (Years 3 – 6), pupils broaden their scientific view to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Pupils are taught to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. They improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]. They study about great artists, architects and designers in history.

In Key stage 3 students should use range of techniques to record observations in sketchbook as basis of exploring their ideas. Using variety of techniques and media including painting are learnt with high proficiency. Students can analyse and evaluate their own work and others to strengthen the visual impact or the application of their work. More importantly, to learn the history of the art, including the periods, style and movements from ancient time to the present.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. They should become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. They must evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. Every pupil must know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

The art department ensures that students become aware of their moral, social, and ethical responsibilities, along with developing a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
