CPD for Teachers

12 May 2022

The Pastoral Care Department had spearheaded a CPD webinar for teachers on “Managing Challenging Behaviours in the Classroom” to enhance teaching and learning. The team invited Dr. Rajeshree Singhania to be the resource speaker for the CPD webinar.

To understand the student better, Dr. Singhania explored the four  functions of behaviours (Escape, Attention, Tangible, Sensory) and the ABCs (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence) of behaviour.  Examples and case studies were  given to  clarify the differences on functions of behaviour. Dr. Singhania presented real life situations on how to determine the ABC’s of behaviour. In order to address the behaviour, Dr. Singhania presented  strategies that may be used inside the classroom. Some of the strategies are Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement and Token System. She further suggested using Daily Schedules and Behaviour Reflection Charts as they help teachers reduce misbehaviour in class.

To conclude the presentation, Dr. Singhania reminded the teachers of the need to understand the factors that are impacting the behaviour of the student and know the underlying causes of the  behaviour. Teachers need to investigate and manage difficult behaviour in class to create and sustain a learning environment that will ensure attainment and progress. Sr. Victoria Lavente, SPC, acknowledged the valuable insight and expertise of Dr. Singhania and the importance of her sharing to the teachers.
