28th January 2019, high ability students of Year 9 volunteered to be “peer coaches” to our determined students. Seven students passionate about numbers would like to share simple ways how to enjoy, learn and to love Maths.
Maths Department in collaboration with the Inclusion Support Department conceptualized and launched the Maths Supplementary Learning Program in the pursuit in building capacity of students with high abilities to be contributing members of the school community.
Determined students were consulted and agreed to commit themselves to this once a week face-to-face coaching while they use their devices to do drills during their free time in school and at home. The goal is to bridge their challenges into opportunities to catch the fundamentals of Maths in a student-centered and fun-filled and interactive activities.
These students had inclusion awareness and sensitivity sessions to further build their understanding of the determined students and possible ways that they can foster outmost respect in words deeds and actions. Ms. Marie Fe “Maf” Cimafranca and Mr. Christopher Martinez walked through with the volunteers the essence and importance of their volunteerism as an act of making St. Mary’s Muhaisnah truly inclusive.
Students shared personal reasons of volunteering and wrote them on commitment cards expressing what they think and what they want to do to help others.
Truly, “Inclusive education is not a project or an initiative. It is a progressive development of attitudes, behaviours, systems, and beliefs that enable inclusive education to become a norm that underpins school culture and is reflected in the everyday life of the school community.” – Dubai Inclusive Education Framework 2017.
