Inclusion being an important focus in all schools in Dubai, the aim of our assembly was to show everyone how the principle of inclusion has been adopted as a part and parcel of our lives in SMM.
At the start, our news reporter introduced the assembly with the vision of Dubai to be ‘a city for everyone’. Through various inspiring examples of some high profile individuals who have succeeded in being their best despite their challenges, a TEDx talk reinforced the message that no physical or learning challenge should limit the human spirit in any way. The idea that physical or learning difficulties do not define a person was driven home. The catch line of this part of the programme was
‘Stop being ordinary and start being extraordinary’.
Following this, students chanted out their own definition of each of the letters of the word ‘I-N-C-L-U-S-I-O-N’. For example, the student carrying the letter ‘I’ said – I have the right to be in every classroom with all of you’…and so on and so forth.
The next part of the programme had the students perform a spoken word poetry with a role play, suggesting the need to include all students in the classroom for building a positive world, brimming with immense possibilities.
The finale of the assembly was the song ‘We Are the World’ which rang out the call to treat everyone equally. A video showing the students displaying their individual posters of their own version of what inclusion meant to them was screened. The video also featured messages on inclusion from some members of the senior leadership team.
